His career began in the trenches as a manual laborer, eventually ascending to Director of Parks before his democratic election to the Town Council and his current role as Supervisor. Key Contributions
Downtown Revitalization and Economic Development
Supervisor Wehrheim made revitalizing the downtowns of Kings Park, Smithtown and St. James a cornerstone of his administration. He helped secure a $10 million New York State Downtown Revitalization Initiative award for Kings Park and advanced major investments in roads, streetscapes, utilities, parking and sewer infrastructure. He has also worked to attract new businesses, address vacant and blighted properties and support sustainable economic growth.
Parks, Beaches and Recreational Facilities
Drawing on his experience as Smithtown’s former Director of Parks, Buildings and Grounds, Supervisor Wehrheim led the renovation or repair of roughly 75% of the Town’s parks and beaches in his first years in office. Major projects include Kings Park Memorial Park, Flynn Memorial Ballpark, Hoyt Farm Nature Preserve, Brady Park, Moriches Park, Morewood Park, Gaynor Park, Gibbs Pond Park, Long Beach Pavilion, Otto Schubert Beach, Short Beach and Smithtown Landing Country Club. He also advanced the Destination KP sports complex and expanded accessible recreation for residents of all ages and abilities.
Sewer Infrastructure and Environmental Protection
Supervisor Wehrheim advanced long-awaited sewer and wastewater projects for Smithtown’s downtowns to protect groundwater, support local businesses and enable responsible revitalization. His administration has also promoted open-space preservation, shellfish seeding, bioswales, tree planting, clean-energy vehicles, solar power, electric-vehicle charging stations and updates to Smithtown’s Local Waterfront Revitalization Program.
Paul T. Given Park and Nissequogue River Preservation
Supervisor Wehrheim helped secure funding to restore Paul T. Given Park and transform the former Oasis property into a public welcome center. The project protects the headwaters of the Nissequogue River while creating an environmentally responsible destination for residents and visitors.
Comprehensive Planning
Supervisor Wehrheim commissioned Smithtown’s first major update to its Townwide Comprehensive Plan since 1957. The plan sets a long-term vision for protecting neighborhoods, preserving open space and sensitive land, revitalizing downtowns and guiding responsible economic development.
Fiscal Responsibility
Under Supervisor Wehrheim’s leadership, Smithtown has maintained its AAA bond rating, the highest available to municipalities. Moody’s has cited the Town’s strong economic base, stable reserves, manageable debt and responsible financial policies. This fiscal strength allows Smithtown to invest in infrastructure, parks and essential services while protecting taxpayers.
Government Modernization and Transparency
Supervisor Wehrheim expanded online access to Town services and information, including electronic building-permit applications, public notices, recycling information, meeting materials and real-time community alerts. He also created a Town grant committee that has secured millions of dollars for municipal improvements and helped local nonprofits find funding opportunities.
Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness
Supervisor Wehrheim supported major investments in public-safety technology, emergency management and enhanced monitoring at Town parks, beaches, marinas and public facilities. The Town’s centralized Public Safety Command Center gives personnel real-time information to assist during emergencies, locate residents in distress and support law-enforcement investigations.
Fighting Addiction and Supporting Families
Supervisor Wehrheim backed the Smithtown Opioid and Addiction Task Force and expanded community education, Narcan training, medication take-back events and recovery resources through the Town’s Horizons Counseling and Education Center. His administration continues to invest in programs serving young people, seniors, veterans, individuals with disabilities and families across Smithtown.
Historic Preservation and Community Improvements
Supervisor Wehrheim has helped restore key Smithtown landmarks, including the Caleb Smith House, Franklin Arthur Farm and Mills Pond House. He helped resolve a 14-year deadlock over the former New York State Armory property in Nesconset, leading to a neighborhood park, village green and a new library branch site. He also oversaw reconstruction of the Roger Balducci Marina and construction of an ADA-accessible elevator at Smithtown Town Hall.
